UNESCO World Heritage Castles in Japan
UNESCO World Heritage designation recognises sites of outstanding universal value — places that belong not just to one nation but to all of humanity. Japan's castles on this list span an enormous range: from Himeji, the supreme example of Edo-period wooden military architecture, to the gusuku stone fortresses of Okinawa that reflect an entirely distinct Ryukyuan castle-building tradition. Several appear as components of broader inscriptions — the Ryukyuan gusuku, for instance, were inscribed together as a group in 2000. What unites them is that UNESCO judged them irreplaceable records of human history, worthy of protection in perpetuity.
