Tonokori Castle was the center of the prolonged power struggle between the Ito clan of Hyuga Province (Miyazaki) and the Shimazu clan of Satsuma (Kagoshima) for control of southern Kyushu. The castle changed hands multiple times between these two great southern Kyushu powers throughout the Sengoku period.
In 1578, the Ito clan's collapse against the Shimazu — known as the 'Hyuga Collapse' (Hyuga Kuzure) — saw the Ito lord Yoshisuke flee his domain completely, seeking refuge with Otomo Sorin of Bungo (Oita). Tonokori Castle fell to the Shimazu as part of this collapse.
Now a public park on the low hill above central Miyakonojo city, Tonokori Castle's ruins are a pleasant green space with views over the Kirishima volcanic landscape to the south. Miyakonojo is the largest city in Miyazaki Prefecture by area and the gateway to the Kirishima volcanic highlands.

The castle's low hill position gave commanding observation of the surrounding Miyakonojo basin — one of the most productive agricultural areas of southern Kyushu.

Tonokori Castle was a Sengoku-period earthwork castle of modest scale. The 'Hyuga Collapse' of 1578 was more a political and military collapse of the Ito clan than a testament to the castle's weakness.
