The Ito-Shimazu Battlefield — The Contest for Southern Kyushu
Tonokori Castle was the center of the prolonged power struggle between the Ito clan of Hyuga Province (Miyazaki) and the Shimazu clan of Satsuma (Kagoshima) for control of southern Kyushu. The castle changed hands multiple times between these two great southern Kyushu powers throughout the Sengoku period.
