Historical Context — Goryokaku

The Western bastion design theoretically made Goryokaku extraordinarily difficult to storm — the flanking fire system meant any approach along the walls would be caught by cannon fire from two directions simultaneously. In the actual 1869 battle, however, the Meiji forces captured the surrounding heights and simply bombarded the fort from elevated positions — the one weakness of a flat-ground star fort is that it provides no answer to plunging fire from high ground. The design was effective against 16th-century European siege tactics but was already being superseded by newer concepts.

Imperial government forces besiege Goryokaku. After capturing the surrounding heights and bombarding the fort, Enomoto Takeaki surrenders in May 1869 — the final capitulation of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Meiji era truly begins here.

1914

The Meiji government demolishes the remaining buildings inside the fort and converts Goryokaku into a public park — one of Japan's first Western-style public parks, still used today.
